The Classics: Which Ones Are Actually Good Reads?

I've made myself a list of 101 things to do in 1001 days, and as a part of that list I decided that I'd like to read 5 'classic' novels.  Novels like Pride & Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre etc.  The only thing is -- I'm not sure which classic novels I should try!  I'm worried that they'll be very tedious and dull and that I'll take ages to get through them.

So tell me!  Which "classic" novels do you actually enjoy?  Which ones should I read?

Thanks for any suggestions offered!

Anon (I'd love to know who you are if you're someone I 'know'). I've read "To Kill A Mockingbird" (yup, it sure is good). I'll definitely check out those others!

I was definitely thinking of Pride & Prejudice, as I know the gist of the story and know the film/BBC versions. Glad to hear Jane Eyre is actually a good one as well!

Go for Jane Austin (Sense and Sensibility as well as P&P), Mark Twain, Nathaniel Hawthorn (I still love The Scarlet Letter), Ernest Hemingway... there are a lot of great American/Canadian authors that have written classics, not just British authors.

I can't even begin to remember all the books I've read because I was an English major in college, but stay away from Moby Dick. You've been warned. :-)

I'm not a classics girl. I have said I want to read some classics...but every one I try is dull and I can't get into it. Thinking back to one I enjoyed years ago...I wanna say it was The Crucible. But that's about it! I have Little Women and To Kill a Mockingbird on my shelf at home staring at me, but I can't bring myself to read any of them.

I'm worried that I'm the same as you, Brandy, and that it will take me ages to get through the 'classics', but I figure I'll give them a try! I'll report back as I read them, LOL.

I like the idea of reading 'classic literature', but we'll see how it goes in reality.
